Department of Pathology in the Southern Medical University, the former First Military Medical University , was the first batch of excellent courses in the whole army, authorized place for doctoral and postdoctoral degrees. It was appraised as Type A Key Subject of Guangdong Province, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Molecular Tumor Pathology, Key Laboratory of Transcriptome and Proteome for Human Major Diseases supported by the Ministry of Education and Guangdong Province , National Training Center for Pathologists. National Quality Course was awarded in 2005.

         Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Molecular Tumor Pathology, affiliated to Pathology Department of School of Basic Medical Sciences and Southern Medical University, was approved as the Key Medical Laboratory of the Whole Army formally in 2000, as Type A Key Subject of Guangdong Province in 2001, as Guangdong Provincial Functional Proteome Key Laboratory and Transgenic Animal Technique Center of Southern Medical University in 2002, as Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education and Guangdong Province. Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Molecular Tumor Pathology. The major research project is molecular tumor pathology, especially researches on molecular mechanisms of metastasis, tumor cytopathology and quantitative pathology. Forty-seven projects were shouldered during the past five years, including National 863 Project, 973 Project, National Natural Science, and Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Project. The prized are as follows: two items of the second prize of National Technology Advancement Prize, one item of the Medical Technology Prize of China, one item of the special prize of Guangdong Provincial Technology Advancement (Pathogen Group), and nine items of Technology Advancement Prize of Guangdong Province and the Ministry of Education. Four National Patents have been obtained.Thirty-six SCI papers (IF: 0.52-34.8) have been published. Eighteen monographs have been compiled as the editor in chief, assistant editor in chief and counselors. Five postdoctoral fellows, 54 doctors, 82 masters, and 22 trainees were cultivated. The platforms of transgenic technique, transcription technique, proteome technique, whole body animal imaging research have been established. The routine pathology laboratory, molecular pathology laboratory, cell culture room, molecular biology laboratory, transgenic laboratory, and stereology laboratory have been equipped. The laboratory occupies an area of 3400 square meters with research equipments worth tens of millions RMB and has about 1.35 million research funds. The laboratory takes the lead in researches on molecular mechanisms of colorectal cancer metastasis, quantitative pathology, and lymphoma diagnosis.

            Here are specimen preparation room, pathology diagnostic room, pathology technique room, molecular pathology room, cytopathology room, pathology archives room, reception room, and inquiry room with excellent equipment in the pathology department of Nanfang Hospital . The pathologists in the department have outstanding experiences in pathology diagnosis, which is very influential throughout the country. There are around 18000 biopsy specimens every year, 15000 cytology specimens, 1000 frozen specimens, and 700 consultations from other hospitals. There are several kinds of pathology techniques. Molecular pathology diagnostic technique is in use with excellent quality and varieties of items. There is a complete collection of pathology archives with professional pathology reference books. Clinical pathology diagnosis is closely connected with research. As one of diagnostic department among the four super comprehensive hospitals in Guangdong Province and ‘National One Hundred Exemplary Hospitals', the department of pathology offers high quality service with excellent diagnostic skills and powerful techniques. In 2006, department of pathology was accredited as the National Training Center for Pathologists.
